A truck crashed into a passenger and cargo train in southern Greece on Saturday, killing the truck driver and injuring two people, the Fire Service said.

The crash occurred shortly before 1pm local time (11am GMT) near the town of Pyrgos in the western Peloponnese region, 320km southwest of Athens.

The Fire Service said two passengers and the train driver were injured in the accident at a rail crossing, which caused at least one car to come off the tracks and smash into a nearby restaurant.

The crash is the second major train accident in Greece in eight days. On March 7, a passenger train derailed, injuring 23 people.

Firefighters took about two hours to free the train driver from the wreckage.

The train was travelling to Pyrgos from the southern city of Kalamata. There were only five passengers on the train, a railway workers’ union official told TV station SKAI.

Fire Service officials said the cause of the collision was not immediately known, but said witnesses had reported seeing the truck ignore a warning light and bell at the crossing. (AP)
