Pakistani troops backed by artillery and helicopters attacked militant hideouts in tribal regions near the Afghan border, killing 40 rebels and arresting 30 others, the military said Thursday. At least eight soldiers also died.

The militants were killed in a series of raids Wednesday and early Thursday in South Waziristan, where scores of Taliban and al-Qaida fighters are believed to be hiding, the army said in a brief statement.
The army said that three areas in the region "had been cleared of militant strongholds and hideouts" as a result of the operations. It said 40 militants were killed and 30 others arrested, while eight soldiers had also died.
Pakistan is a key ally of the United States in its war on terror and it has carried out many military operations in the border region against local tribesman believed sheltering al-Qaida and Taliban fighters blamed for attacks in Pakistan and Afghanistan. (AP)
