Protest over Fatah leader's detention
Israeli security forces yesterday fired tear gas at dozens of rock-throwing Palestinians protesting outside a West Bank prison against the detention of 10 people, including a senior Fatah official.
About 300 protesters had gathered outside the Beituniya checkpoint near the Ofer military prison where the detainees, including Fatah leader Abbas Zaki, have been held since they were arrested during a Palm Sunday march to protest West Bank closures.
When they tried to push through the checkpoint Israeli border police fired tear gas and rubber coated bullets as Palestinian youths hurled stones. Two people were hit by the rarely lethal rounds.
