At least two rockets slammed into central Baghdad on Thursday, killing two civilians and wounding four more while a roadside blast elsewhere in the Iraqi capital killed one person, police said.

Two Katyusha rockets hit Sadoon Street at around noon (0900 GMT), a police official said, adding that two people died on the spot and four more civilians were wounded.

Separately a roadside bomb blast targeting a minibus killed a civilian and wounded four in the Al Jadida neighbourhood of Baghdad, the official said.

US and Iraqi officials say around 700 rockets or mortar rounds have been fired into the city centre over the past month, mainly from Sadr City, the east Baghdad stronghold of the Mahdi Army militia of anti-American cleric Moqtada Al Sadr.

Some 114 projectiles have hit the Green Zone where the US embassy and the Iraqi government is located, killing two US soldiers, two American embassy personnel and two Iraqi guards.
