At least 14 people were killed and 20 injured on Tuesday when a packed passenger van collided head-on with a truck loaded with cement bags on a narrow highway in the southern Philippines, police said. Senior Inspector Reynante Cabico, police chief in Carmen town on the southern island of Mindanao, said it took rescue workers more than two hours to pull out some of the victims' bodies from the wreckage of the jeepney, or van, that crashed into a truck. A jeepney is a uniquely Philippine bus fashioned after the US military jeep. It is the most popular mode of transport in Manila and in outlying provinces. Cabico said the jeepney was carrying about 40 people, some of them sitting on the roof, on their way to Cotabato City to meet a relative arriving from Saudi Arabia after performing the haj when the accident happened at around mid-morning.
