Serco on hunt for Dubai Metro staff

Serco – which recently won the contract to manage, run and maintain Dubai Metro – has started to receive applications from job-seekers – and wants to employ around 3,000 staff, technicians and train specialists over the next five years.

The company said 20 to 30 per cent of positions in upper and middle management – 250 to 300 positions – will be reserved for UAE nationals over the first five years of operation, said Serco’s Managing Director for Dubai Metro Paul Anderson.

Serco, he added, was interested in enabling young nationals to work for the industry to develop their skills. Worldwide, Serco employs around 6,000 people in the train and metro sectors.

Meanwhile, Adel Al Awadhi, marketing manager of Dubai Metro and business development director, Serco Middle East, said the Dubai public transport system is the highest in value among the projects run by the company in the United Kingdom, Australia and Denmark. 

Serco competed for the Dubai Metro contract against SMRT (Singapore Mass Rapid Transit) and a consortium of Singaporean-Japanese-French firms, according to Al Awadhi.

So far, the company has received more than 1,000 job requests from UAE nationals during the recent Careers UAE exhibition in Dubai.

Serco has also prepared a number of training courses for high school graduates, holders of diploma degrees from Higher Colleges of Technology or graduates of various universities.

The 10-year contract was signed between Serco by Dubai’s RTA last month.
