Sheikh Ahmed gets top German honour
Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Chairman of Emirates Group, has been awarded one of Germany's highest honours.
Sheikh Ahmed received the Verfassungsportugaleser Gold Medal for outstanding services to Hamburg at a reception during his trip to Germany.
He was in Germany earlier this week to receive the airline's Airbus A380 superjumbo – the first of 58 it has ordered.
The reception at Hamburg's Town Hall was attended by many senior officials of Emirates airline, representatives from Airbus, and German dignitaries.
Sheikh Ahmed received the Verfassungsportugaleser from German Senator of Economics Axel Gedaschko. Previous recipients of the award include Great Britain's Queen Elizabeth and Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands.
In his address to the congregation, Sheikh Ahmed said: "While our relationship with Germany began
in 1987 with services to Frankfurt, we established strong bonds with Hamburg in 2006 when we started flying to your magnificent city. In this short span of time, Emirates and Hamburg have crossed many bridges together. And this morning we have taken delivery of our first A380." (FRI).
Emergency landing
An Emirates flight from London to Dubai had to make an emergency landing at Budapest's Ferihegy Airport early yesterday due to smoke in the cockpit.
"The pilots carried out a faultless emergency landing after they noticed smoke in the cockpit, most likely due to some electric malfunction," said Emirates' spokesman Mihaly Hardy. The Boeing 777-200, with 380 passengers on board landed at 1.55am, he said.
The exact cause of the malfunction was not yet known, he said.
"Immediate landing is the obligatory emergency procedure when smoke is observed inside the cabin or the cockpit," Hardy said.
The passengers continued their journey on another Emirates aircraft at 12.20pm. (AFP)
