Strong earthquake strikes northern Chile

A strong 6.2 magnitude earthquake shook sparsely populated northern Chile on Monday, causing no injuries or major damage but some power outages in the region, the University of Chile's Seismological Service reported.

The temblor struck at 17:39 pm at a point near Pica, in Iquique city, some 1,500 kilometres (932 miles) north of Santiago.

Chile's National Emergency Office said it has received no reports so far of injuries or damage from the temblor.

Local media, however, said there was power outage in southern Iquique, although it did not affect traffic lights in the area.

The US Geological Survey measured the earthquake at 6.1 magnitude and located its epicenter at a point 142 kilometres (88 miles) east of Iquique, Chile, and 119 kilometres (74 miles) underground. (AFP)
