Twenty people killed in Egypt fog pileup

At least 20 people, including children, were killed in a traffic pileup blamed on early morning fog southeast of Cairo on Thursday, police said.

Three minibuses and six trucks crashed into each other because of low visibility on the road to the Cairo suburb of Helwan, a police official told AFP.

Ambulances rushed to the scene where the death toll was expected to rise as some of the injured were in a critical condition.

About 6,000 people die and 30,000 are injured in road accidents each year in Egypt.

Traffic regulations are often badly enforced and vehicles are poorly maintained. Many coastal and desert roads allow for high speeds, and accidents caused by reckless overtaking are frequent. (AFP)
