An explosion in southern Afghanistan killed two NATO soldiers Wednesday, the alliance said.

Two other soldiers were wounded and were evacuated to a military base for treatment, NATO said in a statement.

It did not disclose the nationalities of the casualties or the exact location of the blast.

Southern Afghanistan is the center of the Taliban-led insurgency against Afghan and foreign troops.

Separately, militants abducted and beheaded two Afghan men working at a US military base in the eastern Kunar province, provincial police Chief Abdul Jalal Jalal said.

They were abducted Monday after they left the base in Korangal Valley, scene of fierce clashes between US troops and insurgents in the past few years. Their bodies were discovered Tuesday, Jalal said.

Militants regularly target people working for US and other foreign forces.

Over 1,000 people, mostly militants, have died in insurgency-related violence so far this year, according to an Associated Press tally of numbers provided by Western and Afghan officials. (AP)
