Talks on customs procedures related to the diamond trade were held yesterday by federal officials and representatives from the United States.

The meeting was held to encourage co-operation between the two sides over training and to improve the efficiency of UAE staff.

“The discussions were characterised by transparency, clarity and understanding between the two parties, especially regarding the suggested means of cooperation in the field of customs training,” said Saeed bin Khalifa Al Merri, Deputy Director-General of the Federal Customs Authority (FCA).

The officials from the US Embassy were particularly interested in learning about customs clearance procedures for the import and export of diamonds.

The FCA provided a list of training programmes that it wished to organise with US customs.

The topics included the simplification of systems, facilitation of commodities supply, development and implementation of customs initiatives, the management and security of borders, intellectual property rights, management strategy and human resources.

The US officials said they would discuss the proposals with specialist organisations at home.
