Construction work on the Dh12 billion Ajman Airport project is expected to begin later this year once approval is obtained from the UAE General Civil Aviation Authority, said a senior official.

Plans setting out the area of the project and the airport’s specifications have been submitted to the authority by Ajman Municipallity and Planning Department, Mohammed bin Omair Al Muhairi, acting assistant director-general for technical affairs, told Emirates Business.

And Majed Al Shammari,  Executive Director of Spain’s White Lake Consortio, the project’s master developer,  said: “The construction work will start during the second half of this year.

My company together with other Spanish and UAE-based contractors, will construct the development in accordance with international specifications.”

Al Shammari said the airport would be built at Al Manama on a desert site of six million square metres and was scheduled to open by 2011. “We are currently in the process of studying tenders from local and Spanish companies for the construction work.

The names of the companies that will be awarded contracts will be announced later.“The construction work will start with the laying of tarmac as this takes a relatively long time.

Then we will build the passenger terminal and the departure and arrival lounges. The airport will have a separate area for private and business aviation plus a staff training centre, a free zone and offices.

The management of the airport will be the responsibility of ICTC, which runs 200 international airports around the world including Frankfurt International Airport.“The second phase of the project will involve the construction of a complete city, that will provide accommodation for the employees of the operating companies.

“It will include a hotel, a business centre, schools, hospitals and a shopping mall in addition to other entertainment facilities.“We have already received offers from operators of low-cost carriers.
And the Government of Ajman is considering setting up an airline to offer services to passengers within Ajman and the rest of the emirates.”The project is expected to create 28,000 jobs and training courses will be available for nationals.

White Lake is a leading developer in Spain and the airport’s work will mark its entry into the UAE market.“We are setting up an office in Ajman and consultants, engineers and technical staff and managers will work together closely on the project,” added Al Shammari.

Cable Car Project In The Offing

Ajman is considering building a telefreek cable car project along the Corniche and Al Zawra beach area, Al Muhairi has revealed.

He presented the proposal at the opening of the three-day Urban Planning Conference at Ajman University and said that the service would boost tourism.

The plan has been welcomed by His Highness Sheikh Humaid bin Rashid Al Nuaimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Ajman, said Al Muhairi. The project will be similar to the telefreek service at Dubai Creek Park. “Once it is approved we will announce the project for consultancy and construction tenders,” he said.

“Visitors will enjoy seeing Ajman’s beautiful beaches and the giant coastline projects via a telefreek ride.”
