A contract for the construction of Abu Dhabi’s largest road and tunnel project is to be signed within weeks, a senior official told Emirates Business on Monday.
The development of a 3km section of Al Salam Street, including interchanges, will cost Dh3 billion, said Dr Jauan Salem Al Dhaheri, head of the capital’s Department of Municipal Affairs.
The aim of the project is to ease congestion and improve traffic flow in and out of the city, he said.Al Dhaheri was speaking at the opening of a Dh700 million bridge.
Al Shawamekh Bridge was inaugurated by Mohammed Ahmed Al Bawardi, secretary-general of the Abu Dhabi Executive Council. The bridge is the third and final phase of the Abu Dhabi-Dubai road expansion project.
“The bridge is in the shape of a clover leaf and will meet all the traffic needs of Abu Dhabi city,” said Juma Mubarak Al Junaibi, Director-General of Abu Dhabi Municipality.
“The design of the bridge was modified many times due to the huge amount of development occurring in the surrounding area.” Salem bin Hafeez, Chairman of Bin Hafeez General Contracting, which built the bridge, said the project was a giant achievement for the emirate. “We constructed the bridge according to the best international standards and practices aimed at supporting the network of roads and developing the capital’s infrastructure,” he said.
Al Dhaheri said Abu Dhabi was witnessing unprecedented improvements in its infrastructure, particularly the road network, to support large-scale construction and the growing population. |
