Anti-doping strategies targeting individual footballers which cost some $30 million (Dh110m) a year are ineffective, Fifa's chief medical officer Jiri Dvorak said yesterday.

Dvorak told a Fifa medical conference in South Africa that roughly 10 cases of 33,000 tests done annually, at a cost of $1,000 per sample, were positive. "We think that the individual in-competition and out-of-competition testing in football is really inefficient and ineffective. Random team testing of elite teams at any time offers a more deterring effect," said Dvorak.
