Arsenal appeal against red card to Vermaelen

Arsenal have appealed against the red card shown to defender Thomas Vermaelen in Saturday's match against West Ham, it was announced on Monday.

Vermaelen was sent-off shortly before half-time for bringing down the Hammers' Guillermo Franco inside the penalty area. A statement from the Football Association on Arsenal's website said: "The FA has received a claim for wrongful dismissal from Arsenal defender Thomas Vermaelen. A regulatory commission heard the claim yesterday."
