World soccer authority FIFA says there have been more than 500,000 online applications for tickets for the 2010 World Cup since they went on sale on February 20.

FIFA said applications have so far been received from 506,000 applications from 140 countries. The total does not include hard paper applications made by South African residents.

FIFA says that 15 per cent of the 3 million tickets will be priced at $20, well below the top ticket of $900. The low-priced tickets will be available only to those living in South Africa, a nation with high unemployment and poverty.

Tickets will be sold in several phases and are available at www.FIFA.com. A random draw will be held on April 15 at the end of the first phase.
