Manchester United's Portuguese star Cristiano Ronaldo has escaped injury after a car crash.

Manchester police said the winger's Ferrari hit a roadside barrier near the city's international airport as it entered a tunnel beneath the runways yesterday morning.

Police then carried out a breath test on the European Player of the Year at the scene, but later confirmed the results were negative.

No other vehicle was involved in the accident that left the front of Ronaldo's vehicle badly damaged. United goalkeeper Edwin Van der Sar was said to be following in his Bentley. United said the star was unharmed and had returned to the club.

"He was involved in an accident this morning," confirmed a club spokesman.

"He's fine and is training as normal with the team."

Jody Lomax was close to the crash and told the BBC: "The Ferarri went straight into the wall, his front left-hand wheel came off and then Ronaldo got out of the car. He was alright, he was walking. He was obviously shaken – who wouldn't be?"

Meanwhile, Mike Tindall, the England rugby player, was yesterday banned from the roads for three years for drink-driving.
