Four days after winning the BMW PGA Championship, Miguel Angel Jimenez pulled out of the Wales Open following injury to his knee in the first round yesterday.

The 44-year-old Spaniard had played 12 holes on the Twenty Ten course when he decided to limp in, putting a serious question mark over his participation in the US Open in two weeks' time.

"It's my right knee and I have been having treatment on it for the past two days," said Jimenez.

"The problem isn't so much when playing shots, more when I'm walking. There was no point making it worse," he added.

When play started after two hours of fog delay, India's Jeev Milkha Singh set the pace with a bogey-free round of six-under 65.

But he was overtaken by former American amateur champion, Italy's Edoardo Molinari, who came in with a seven-under 64.

Singh, who is sponsored by the Dubai-based Jumeirah Golf Estates, made three straight birdies from the 16th onwards to make the turn at four-under after starting from the 10th.

Colin Montgomerie, desperately trying to claw up the world rankings, started with a two-under 69.

Reigning Open champion Padraig Harrington is among those playing in the afternoon groups.
