When the Proteas batsman made his Test debut against Australia last month, a businessman sponsored a trip for his mother to watch him. After his match-winning performances Down Under, he won't need to rely on charity any longer, as he becomes a star pick in Friday's IPL auction. The left-hander can expect to land a contract worth more than $1million (Dh3.67m) for the 44-days.

David Beckham

AC Milan coach Carlo Ancelotti has said he wants to keep the England midfielder at the club for longer than the two-month loan period. Meanwhile, the 33-year old has stated this week that he has not made a final decision on his future just yet. With just two days remaining in the transfer window after today, the Italian club will need to act quickly.

Roger Federer

If the three-time Australian Open champion wins in Melbourne tomorrow, he will equal Pete Sampras' record of 14 career Grand Slams. Should he win, he will also take a step closer to regaining his No1 world ranking.

Tana Umaga

The Former New Zealand captain will step out of retirement to help French side Toulon escape relegation this season. The 35-year old, who stopped playing two years ago, is the club's manager, but this week signed a player contract until the end of the season as his club lie at the bottom of the French championship table. The centre was one of rugby's best back-line players before retiring.

Colin Montgomerie

The Scot was handed the news of his appointment as the 2010 European Ryder Cup captain prior to the Dubai Desert Classic, and all the attention will be on him this weekend.
