The lawyer representing a man accused of raping an eight-year-old girl after seeing her leave a teaching institute yesterday questioned the credibility of the charges and said he wanted to cross-examine the forensic doctor who investigated the case.

Defendant MR, 21, from Pakistan, denies kidnapping the Bangladeshi girl, threatening and assaulting her, and said a confession he gave to the police was obtained by force.

The accused, who is being held in custody, attended yesterday's hearing at Dubai Criminal Court.

However, two prosecution witness, police officers Mohammed Sabet and Ahmed Murad, who defence lawyer Sameera Gargash wishes to cross-examine, failed to turn up.

The public prosecution said MR saw the girl leave the study centre in Hor Al Anz and told her he would buy sweets and juice for the students.

He asked her to come with him and when she went to his car he took her to a car park and allegedly raped her there.

The girl recognised MR in an identity parade.

The medical report said the injury the child suffered could have been a result of the assault, and the DNA in a hair found on the back seat of the car matched the blood sample from the girl.

The trial was adjourned until April 5 when the testimony of the doctor and the police officers is due to be heard.

Sabet accompanied the defendant during a reconstruction of the alleged attack and Murad investigated the defendant's background.
