A deal to enhance co-operation over the protection, breeding and release of the houbara bustard – the traditional quarry of Arab falconers – was signed yesterday by the Environment Agency - Abu Dhabi (EAD) and China's forestry department.

There has been a decline in the number of birds and both parties agree that this process can only be halted by strengthening efforts at its breeding and wintering sites.

The two sides will co-operate in conserving the houbara's habitat, and a breeding centre will be established at Xinjiang. The partners will work together on a programme to breed and release the bird.

EAD will provide funding, equipment and technology for the implementation of the agreement, while the Chinese will provide administrative support, counterpart funds and equipment.

Details will be finalised by both sides based on the requirements and work.
