High on hype, low on content

Akshay Kumar is at an interesting point in his Bollywood career: His films continue to break records, yet the content is sliding faster than the stock value in these current economic times.

The Nikhil Advani-directed Chandni Chowk to China or CC2C suffers in the same way. The hype certainly exists with Warner Bros lending its name to the project as distributors, but the film's plot borders on the point of sheer stupidity. So where does it leave us viewers? Probably cursing the fact we forked over Dh30 to watch this trash.

Kumar plays Sidhu, a simpleton cook from Chandni Chowk, Delhi, who's whisked to China by Chinese labourers when they spot his vegetable slicing skills and are convinced he's the reincarnation of their saviour – the ancient warrior Liu Shengh.

In Beijing, Sidhu crosses paths with Sakhi (Deepika Padukone) and joins her in the mission to take down her father's murderer, the evil Hojo (Gordon Liu), who coincidentally is the same enemy those labourers want to kill. But Hojo has a secret weapon, Sakhi's twin, Meeow (Padukone again).

Confused? Well, the bad news is, the rest of the film bumbles along in the same fashion while we are left scratching our heads trying to make sense of it all.
