Yas, it is an easy weekend getaway

You'd be forgiven for associating Yas Island with only the annual Abu Dhabi Grand Prix… at the end of the day there have hardly been any major events taking place there since last year's race weekend. But actually, Yas Island is open for business, as we found out on a recent trip to the Radisson Blu Hotel, Yas Island.

Due to competitive rates, the island's hotel offers great value-for-money weekend packages. And depending on where you live, you can easily reach it in less than an hour.

Popular with expats and UAE nationals from Abu Dhabi and Dubai alike, the four-star property is located at the heart of the island, offering views of the first Yas Links golf course, the Formula One race track and the yet-to-open Ferrari World.

Rooms are moderately sized, with basic, comfortable beds and furniture, plus TV and satellite services. Each room has a balcony, which is great use when the weather's nice, but you won't be needing to stay in your room for long anyway.

After breakfast there's plenty to do without having to leave the hotel. First up, there are several heated pools with sun loungers and drinks service available throughout the day, and for those wanting to be pampered The Spa offers a variety of treatments for both men and women. Just make sure you book with the reception in advance.

Meanwhile, the hotel's newest addition is the opportunity to opt for a golfing package, allowing you to test your skills on the Yas Links golf course.

Packages have been created to attract both professional and amateur golfers alike. And for those couples who can never agree, there's a package to suit both parties; a day on the course for one and a day in the spa for the other.

For relaxing evening entertainment, head to Filini, the hotel's Italian restaurant, where you'll be spoilt for choice with the menu options on offer. With fabulous starters and mouthwatering main courses (try the green pea risotto), you'll struggle with dessert later. There's also Zeeba, offering the finest Persian cuisine, and for after-dinner drinks, you can spend the rest of your evening at Filini.

Just goes to show you can spend 48 hours in just one place.
