If you are one of those men who like to dress nattily and could scream in frustration at the limited choice of accessories on the market then you might want to book an appointment with Cyril Mothe.
This Dubai-based French designer will help you step out in royal style with belts made of exotic skins and adorned with custom-built buckles.
However, you have to be prepared to pay for your sense of style as he uses only precious metals and stones such as silver, gold, platinum, diamonds, rubies and emeralds.
The minimum price of a buckle created by Mothe is Dh250,000 and the sky is the limit because the greater the weight of precious metals and stones the higher the price. The most expensive buckle Mothe has made cost Dh890,000.
It is no wonder, then, that most of Mothe's clients are members of the UAE and Saudi royal families or top Middle East businessmen and CEOs.
"It all started when I designed a buckle for myself as I was very frustrated with the stuff that was available in the market," he told Emirates Business.
"There was nothing stylish enough for a metrosexual man and the others were just too flashy. So as I design jewellery I decided to make one for myself out of black and icy diamonds.
"My customers saw me wearing it, liked it and asked me to make one for them too."
The most expensive buckle Mothe has made so far was for a Saudi prince.
"It was a big buckle with the prince's initial F wrapped around the fleur-de-lys," he said. "While the fleur-de-lys was made of gold and white and brown diamonds, the F was made of gold encrusted with black diamonds. It cost Dh890,000 and took more than eight months to make."
Most of Mothe's buckles take that long to produce as they have to go through a number of stages. He makes only two or three buckles a year and never repeats a design.
"When a client comes to me and tells me what he wants I first prepare a pencil sketch. Once he approves a sketch I make another sketch in the same colours that he has chosen for the precious metals and stones so that he has a fair idea of what it will look like after the settings have been done.
"Once that has been approved I give him an idea of what it's going to cost and once that is out of the way we proceed with the wax mould and the master mould.
"A lot of people are very actively involved in the process. We show the customer the wax mould before we make the master so that if they want to make any changes during that stage they can do it before it is too late to do anything about it.
"Once a buckle has been made we will never make another of the same design again as it is all about exclusivity and we guarantee our clients that."
Once the buckle has been completed it is given to the client in a box with a set of eight leather belts to go with it. These belts are made of crocodile skin, python, zebra, commodo dragon and buffalo.
"We source all these skins from Paris and make the belts ourselves. The crocodile and buffalo skin belts are available in three colours, black, brown and white. Commodo dragon skin is the most expensive of the lot as they are an endangered species and no one is allowed to kill them. You can only get the skin once the animal dies a natural death, so it is very rare. The price of the eight skins is a little over Dh172,000."
Now Mothe is working on a new line that will feature buckles made in the shape of animal heads adorned with precious metals and stones.
