If you are fond of all things equestrian then a property that was once owned by Ogden Phipps, a famous name in the world of horse racing, is sure to be of interest to you.

The manor house, situated in Old Westbury, New York, has been put on the market by Piping Rock Associates, affiliate of Christie's Great Estates, for Dh43 million.

This Georgian-style estate – a 45-minute drive away from Manhattan – was built in 1930 and designed by noted architectural firm Delano and Aldrich.

Patrick Mackay of Piping Rock Associates said: "Phipps was a noted stockbroker, tennis champion, horse-racing breeder, art collector and philanthropist."

Built by Delano and Aldrich, this elegant home is one of the last grand estates in Long Island.

The Phipps Estate is home to beautifully preserved Old World architectural details, including 16-foot ceilings, deep feather moldings, pine library panelling, carved wooden fireplace mantelpieces, and skillfully hand-painted wallpapers. Mackay said the residence also features "richly appointed rooms that evoke the elegance and grandeur of yesteryears".

This two-storey mansion built on 20 wooded acres is introduced by a dramatic entrance flanked by columns and moldings. The master bedroom features a long hall leading to another room, a large bath with a spa tub and a hall of closets.

The second-floor bedrooms are also highly luxurious, with warm, relaxing fireplaces, baths and generous windows that bring in sunlight and views.

The second floor also has a staff area that provides two comfortable double bedrooms as well as three single bedrooms and multiple baths. There is also a five-bedroom apartment and a three-bedroom caretaker's house on the estate grounds that provides additional accommodations for staff members and guests.

The estate has a hillside garden, a fishpond, a waterfall, a vegetable garden, fruit trees and slate terraces that afford bucolic vistas.

On the lower level, there is also a breakfast room, with emerald-hued marble flooring that leads to a large greenhouse. There is also a heated pool and tennis court.

Talking about the neighbourhood and the recreational facilities in the area, Mackay said: "The village of Old Westbury has been ranked as the 10th most expensive zip code in the United States.

The area has been home to many of America's most influential families over the past century and has provided a spectacular backdrop for numerous films including North by Northwest, The Age of Innocence and Hitch.

"Old Westbury offers luxurious, refined country living, and yet is an easy 45-minute drive to the shopping, entertainment and cultural delights of New York City."

Noted for its exceptional horse breeding facilities, Old Westbury was once home to Tommy Hitchcock Jr, perhaps the world's greatest ever polo player.

The area is also home to the beautiful Old Westbury Gardens, which are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Gardens serve as a cultural centre for the community and offer events ranging from outdoor orchestral concerts to poetry recitals.

"This mansion is a testament to Ogden Phipps' life and successes and is ready to welcome a new and deserving owner," Mackay said.
