What is it?

The summit is the platform for policy decision-making, investment and high-level business deals. Government officials, heads of global organisations, leading environmentalists and international investors will meet from Monday to Wednesday to discuss and plan the world's future energy. It held its inaugural event in January last year under the patronage of Sheikh Mohammad bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces. This year's event will be held at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre.

How did it come about?

In April 2006, Abu Dhabi took a decision to embrace renewable and sustainable energy technologies. As the first major hydrocarbon-producing nation to take such a step, it launched Masdar – a co-operative platform for open engagement in the search for solutions to pressing issues in energy security.

What themes will it cover?

The themes of the summit include energy policy, investment and funding, green buildings, clean transport, solar technology, wind energy, biofuels, ocean power, geothermal, waste to energy, fuel cells and carbon management.

Why should I attend?

To hear the world's leading experts on the future of energy; to identify investment opportunities and risks on a global level; to learn about the latest innovations from more than 200 exhibitors, spread across 12 international pavilions.

Who are the speakers?

Tony Blair, former British Prime Minister (pictured below), Prince Willem-Alexander of the Netherlands, Dr Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber, CEO of Masdar, Dan Arvizu, Director, National Renewable Energy Lab, Preston Chiaro, Chief Executive of Energy at Rio Tinto, Sigmar Gabriel – representing German Chancellor Angela Merkel – the Federal Minister for the Environment, Dr Susan Hockfield, President of Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Pascal Husting, Executive Director of Greenpeace France and Andris Piebalgs, Commissioner for Energy at the European Commission.
