Abu Dhabi classics: Gulzar's tribute to Rabindranath Tagore
Keeping in line with the theme of this season, the evening of poetry and music is dedicated to the Nobel Laureate, poet, novelist and composer Rabindranath Tagore, who, like no other artist from India in the 20th century had a far reaching influence not only on Indian literature and music, but also on Western art and philosophy.
Although his poetry and novels achieved international fame, it is less well known that his creations include a body of musical works of more than 2,000 songs, many of them in the traditional forms of raagas and taalas.
The rich lyrics in Bengali language deal with multiple subjects: the aspiration of the higher, sorrow, joy, love and longing.
To renew Rabindranath Tagore's poetry and transport it into today's world, the season is honoured to welcome one of India's most celebrated poets, writers, lyricists and film directors, Gulzar, whose works have been influenced by Bengali poetry and literature.
He has been decorated with several accolades and awards including Hollywood's globally famous Academy Award and the most recent Dadasaheb Phalke Award by the Indian government.
Gulzar will recite his Hindi and English translations of selected works of Gurudeva (Tagore).
He will be accompanied by Ajoy Chakrabarty who will showcase some of Tagore's compositions: Dhrupads, Khayal songs, Thumrīs, Geet and songs based on Western tunes.
With an astounding control over voice and his command over diverse genres such as Khayal, Thumri and Rabindra Sangeet, Ajoy Chakrabarty is one of the most acclaimed vocalists today and the ideal person to join Gulzar on his journey through the works of Rabindranath Tagore.
Well known director-choreographer Salim Arif will transform the interaction of music and poetry into a truly memorable experience for the audience.
The two stalwarts will perform the same programme at the Al Ain theatre (Al Ain) on October 14.
