Fugitive US whistleblower Edward Snowden was allegedly seduced by a Russian spy.

The ‘will you marry me’ tweet he received last year from a Russian celebrity was part of a plan to trap him, according to a former KGB agent.

Anna Chapman was allegedly working on orders from Russian agents who wanted to continue questioning Snowden about the US security secrets, reports nypost.com

Had Snowden accepted the ‘public proposal’, he would have a right to Russian citizenship and he would then need permission to leave, explained the former KGB agent.

The spy-turned Russian celebrity Chapman, meanwhile, refused to answer questions about her proposal.

In 2010, she had made headlines when her pictures went viral and it was revealed that she was part of a sleeper cell of Russian agents in the US, where she worked as a real estate agent. She was soon deported in a swap along with nine other spies.

She became a model upon her return to Russia and joined the youth-wing of the main pro-Kremlin party, the report said.

Snowden, who is wanted in the US after allegedly leaking details of government surveillance programmes, is in Russia on a three-year residency permit.
