Dubai Diary: What to do this weekend?

Amr Diab

Published
By Bindu Suresh Rai

The team here has debated, argued and even bribed each other to vote for the top event this weekend, but everyone has finally admitted defeat in face of such big names that has Dubai denizens spoilt for choice over the next few days.

The legendary Duran Duran takes us back to big frizzy hair days of the ’80s when we head banged our days away to the beats of “Hungry Like The Wolf”; meanwhile, many a nights were spent tripping over our feet trying to master the moves of the Gipsy Kings’ “Volare”.

Similarly, many a memory has seen us “Chasing Cars” around our head, just as Snow Patrol had crooned, while the Arabian Nights fantasies saw Amr Diab gallop in to the strums of “Nour El Ain.”

How does one decide which concert makes the cut this weekend? We aren’t sure either, but if you are worried about funding this mad three-day affair, this would be a good time to crack open that piggy bank.

Thursday, March 8

Duran Duran Live in Dubai

English rockers, Duran Duran have stepped out of that ’80s’ show that continues to unspool in our heads every time we flashback to the ‘good ole days’ and are set to perform at the Sevens Stadium, playing all their greatest hits.

The Birmingham band has travelled many a decade since their origins in 1978, while captaining the MTV-driven ‘Second British Invasion’ of the US in a few short years.

Duran Duran is one of the few bands that can boast 14 singles in the Top 10 of the UK Singles Chart and 21 in the Billboard Hot 100 and have, according to the Sunday Mercury, sold more than 100 million records.

Controversies have also gone hand in hand with the rockers, but that has only lent to the notoriety that has spanned Duran Duran’s music across generations.

The March 8 concert will kick off at 9pm, with doors opening at 6pm.

Organised by Done Events, tickets are priced at Dh300 and Dh500. Call: 04 439 0900

Gipsy Kings Live in Concert

The legendary Gipsy Kings return to Dubai for an adrenaline-pumping concert once again at the Burj Park, Downtown Burj Khalifa on Thursday.

Since their self-titled debut album of 1987, the two bands of brothers brought the sound of ‘rumba Gitano’ to the world with “Bamboleo” and there has been no looking back since.

Organised by Sundance Events, as part of the du World Music Festival, tickets are priced at Dh250 and Dh325.

Doors open 6pm, show starts 9pm. For more information, call: 04 3414 353

Friday, March 9

Snow Patrol and Calvin Harris

The Sandance weekend has finally come with an exciting line-up that includes Snow Patrol, Calvin Harris (DJ Set), Erick Morillo and many more, who will take to the stage at Nasimi Beach, Atlantis The Palm.

Naturally we are cheering for the alternative rock band from Ireland, which took the world by storm with its album, “Final Straw” in 2003 and followed it up with their next studio album, “Eyes Open”, (2006) that gave us the smash hit, “Chasing Cars.”

Yes, we are indeed talking about Irish boys, Snow Patrol, who are sure to bring the house down this Friday, what with Calvin Harris also in the house.

Tickets are almost sold out so try your luck at the gate. Tickets are priced at Dh250 and Dh400. The event kicks off at 2pm until 2am.

Amr Diab Live

For those of you looking for some Arabian adventure then head no further than Burj Park, , Downtown Burj Khalifa where the world famous Egyptian pop star, Amr Diab will be performing live.

Arguably the best-selling Arab artist ever, Diab biggest hit to date has been “Nour El Ain”, which saw the smash track cross global boundaries and even win him the Wold Music Award.

Many spin-offs have followed but no one can live up the energy and the style that Diab breathes into his music.

Organised by Sundance Events as part of the du World Music Festival, tickets are priced at Dh195, Dh250, and Dh350.
