Britain's Duke and Duchess of Cambridge were reportedly keen to send their son to a nursery school as they wanted him to enjoy his "freedom" for as long as he can.

The royal couple - who wed in 2011 - fully appreciate their son, who is third in line to the throne, won't be able to afford the luxury of time away from the spotlight in the future and so want him to make the most of it now.

A source told Bella magazine: "Montessori focuses on social development and independence as well as education. Children are encouraged to choose whatever activity suits them, and then the teacher is there to be a guide. As George gets older there will be constraints in his life, so this is a great start where he will get independence and freedom.

"He needs to have as much freedom as possible for as long as possible. This method of education gives a child a strong sense of what they like and dislike, which should give him the confidence he'll need as our future monarch."

Meanwhile, the two-year-old Prince is learning how to make his own decisions whilst at Westacre Montessori School.

Louise Livingston, director of training at the Maria Montessori Institute, which provides training to the majority of teachers at the school, said: "There is a lot of focus on independence and helping children do things for themselves and make their own decisions and their own choices. They will be encouraging him - right from the minute he walks across the doorstep - to do things for himself."
