After Parineeti, is Alia Bhatt ready to take on Priyanka Chopra?

One film old but already a darling of the fashion pages and the gossip rags, star child Alia Bhatt is no stranger to the limelight after her glamorous debut in Karan Johar’s ‘Student of the Year’ back in 2011.

On the ‘Highway’ promotional tour in Dubai with co-star Randeep Hooda, Alia reveals her aspirations to sing her way up the ranks of fame much like her senior Priyanka Chopra, with the possibility of a private album of her own in future.

Interestingly, Alia has been pitted often against PeeCee’s younger cousin, Parineeti, in a media-generated clash of the most promising Bollywood talent to emerge in the past two years.

While Alia has ranked in the fashionista stakes, it has largely been Parineeti who has walked away with the accolades for acting talent, which her contender herself has admitted on the talk show ‘Koffee With Karan’ as feeling threatened by.

However, Alia is now honing another talent of hers as she croons ‘Sooha Saha’ in her upcoming film that releases across UAE cinemas on February 19.

Talking about her playback singing turn, Alia told Emirates 24|7: “When Imtiaz (Ali, director of ‘Highway’) made ‘Rockstar’, he wanted Ranbir Kapoor to sing himself. But AR Rahman shot the idea down.

“However, while shooting for the film I would often hunker down and sing around the unit. So he approached AR Rahman again to give me a try.”

Alia admitted that she was “really nervous” when she walked into the recording studio the first time and kept getting everything wrong at the beginning.

She continued: “After we did it, Rehman sir told me that I should seriously consider learning music and within two years I should be able to cut my own album too.”

Does this mean a singing instructor has been hired?

“No, not yet. But that is the plan once I finish with my promotional tour of ‘Highway’,” she admitted. “But first I want to learn the piano and singing will fall into play after that.”

The 20-year-old daughter of filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt also put her vocational talent to the test by singing a line from ‘Phataka Guddi’, a song in her next film.

As for Randeep, who was all praises for this young talent, did however admit in a chat that he did not watch Alia’s debut film ‘Student of the Year’, calling it “boring” and “not the kind of film he would ever watch.”

The media event in Dubai was organised by Dream Advertising and Ministry of Events.
