Thousands of people gathered Monday outside Los Angeles city hall to hear pop star Lady Gaga lead a vigil for victims of the Orlando nightclub shooting.

Gaga's voice faltered and she fought back tears as she read a statement that named some of the 49 people killed by gunman Omar Mateen in the worst terror attack on US soil since the September 11 strikes.

The lone shooter also wounded 53 before he was killed when police stormed the Pulse nightclub early Sunday.

"I know that you all have been feeling a tremendous range of emotions since we have all heard about this horrible hateful attack on Orlando," said Gaga, as she addressed a crowd.

The singer, known for her flamboyant on-stage attire, wore an unusually subdued black t-shirt and dark jeans. Her flowing blonde hair was neatly tucked under a black cap.

"This is an attack on humanity itself... an attack on everyone," said Gaga.

"They are sons and daughters, they're fathers and mothers. They are all our brothers and our sisters but tonight I will not allow my anger and outrage over this attack to overshadow our needs to honor those who are grieving truly for their lost ones, lost members of community."
