What’s hot at the UAE cinemas this week

The run-up to the weekend does appear promising, with a good mix of movies, but there’s a certain star appeal that’s largely lacking.

Although Mel Gibson has charmed his way to our hearts, innumerable times in the past, his latest tryst with the guns in ‘How I Spent My Summer Vacation’ lacks the punch. Could his wrinkles be blamed for it?

And, there’s John Cusack, who does boast of impressive female favouritism, but never quite enjoyed colossal fame in Hollywood. The reasons will make for good reading in a later column, but for now, it’s his latest thriller ‘Raven’, which uncovers the mystery behind a spate of killings inspired by writer Edgar Allan Poe's books, that’s got us thrilled. Set in 19th Century Baltimore, this murky tale should find a lot of takers.

Woody Harrelson is another impressionable actor, who has, unfortunately, got flak for his dark past and never any appreciation for his performances, but ‘Rampart’ should, most definitely, change that.

But what might get the biggest applause is ‘Street Dance 2’ as it’s jam-packed with some incredibly cool moves. Although, it’s unclear, how the 3D format would impact its box-office earnings.
