London's Heathrow Airport is working to reunite thousands of bags with their owners after computer failures at its flagship terminal, plunging its new chief executive straight into firefighting mode.

The baggage system went down at Terminal 5, home to British Airways, last Thursday.

The intermittent problems continued until Sunday, the airport said, resulting in bags needing to be sorted manually and producing a huge backlog.

Heathrow is the world's third busiest airport, serving 191,200 passengers per day.

But the latest baggage system fault is not new in Heathrow.

The baggage problem brought back memories of the disastrous opening of Terminal 5 in 2008 when hundreds of flights were cancelled and thousands of bags were lost.

British Airways has been involved in high-profile luggage losses.

Deepika Padukone

Bollywood actress Deepika Padukone was recently might miffed with British Airways. Last month the Indian actress lost her luggage for the fourth time while travelling with the airlines.

Angry Deepika took to Twitter and expressed her displeasure over the incident.

Padukone posted on the popular social networking site, “Seems like British Airways’ hobby is losing bags! 4th time & pretty sure not the last! #appalling.”

The 'Happy New Year' actress further wrote, “Should have stuck to my 1st and favourite choice of @emirates @EmiratesSupport #lessonlearnt @BritishAirways.”

Coleen Rooney

The latest BA victim being English star footballer Wayne Rooney's wife Coleen Rooney.

Coleen has hit out at British Airways after her luggage was allegedly "ransacked" en route to Las Vegas.

The 28-year-old star took to Twitter to blast British Airways after thousands of pounds worth of her personal belongings were allegedly snatched from suitcase en route to her holiday destination.

She tweeted: "Feel sick..... just received my 4 cases 2 days late from BA Heathrow to Las Vegas. Opened them all and they have been completely ransacked.

"Bags, shoes, bikinis, clothes, toiletries, underwear, pj's, make up, toiletries taken. Disgusting & the customer service getting is terrible (sic)."

She later added: "They have even took my toothbrush!! Why?? (sic)."

Ustad Amjad Ali Khan

BA also misplaced legendry Indian musician Ustad Amjad Ali Khan's sarod, which he has been strumming for the last 45 years.

But it was eventually restored to the iconic musician.

The 68-year-old sarod maestro took to Twitter to announce that the instrument was delivered to him by British Airways(BA), calling it an "epic reunion". "Epic Reunion!!! BA delivers my Sarod. Thank you all for your prayers and love, especially the media for their...," Khan tweeted.

Khan was travelling first class on BA flight (BA-143) on their return journey from London.

And the Kardashians

Not too long ago, American reality TV star Kim Kardashian also lost her luggage and she vented out her anger on British Airways on Twitter.

She said staff at the airport may have taken several handbags and 'priceless' sunglasses she inherited from her late father.

She wrote on Twitter, "Very disappointed in British Airways for opening my luggage & taking some special items of mine! Some things are sentimental &not replaceable.

'What happened to the days when you could lock your bags! We need to get back to that. There's no sense of security & no trust! Shame on you(sic)."

In 2008 supermodel Naomi Campbell also accused BA staff of stealing her possessions and claimed she was a 'martyr' after being arrested for assaulting two police officers at Terminal 5.
