Malayalam film star Suresh Gopi drags star wars to Dubai, speaks out against the movie artists association. Says he will continue to boycott their meetings.

Dubbed as the ‘superstar’ of the Malayalam film industry, there has been an ongoing cold-war between the actor and the Association of Malayalam Movies Artistes (AMMA) for a several years.

In 1998 the actor was asked to pay a hefty fine for participating in a stage show, in violation of a ban that prohibited leading film stars from participating in stage shows and television programmes while their films are being screened across theatres.

Incidentally Tilakan who recently died following a heart attack had been fighting a lone battle against the diktats of AMMA and openly speaking out against several leading actors for trying to destabilize his acting career.

Speaking to journalists at India Club in Dubai Suresh Gopi said, “I will continue to boycott the AMMA meetings. It is a decision that I made ever since I was punished in 1998 for a fault, which I personally feel I was not a part of. I finally had to pay a hefty fine,” said Gopi.

He also added that he was instrumental along with other Malayalam film stars such as Ganesh and Venu Nagavalli in forming the organization.

“In fact at that time there were many who were opposd to the idea. In fact Murali was the one who coined the name AMMA for the organization.

Even today I do unofficially consult the office bearers and other members before any major decision is taken. But I do not want to attend their meetings,” he said.

Gopi has also urged AMMA to return the fine collected from him and donate it to a family of the film fraternity currently going through a rough period. The actor also lashed out several leading stars for criticized Tilakan while he was alive but had only glorious words for him after he died.
