The Oscars need to take the backseat here - hands down the Met Gala is the most fashionable evening of the year.

Stars of Hollywood and the fashion world converged on the Metropolitan Museum of Art Monday evening for the annual Costume Institute gala, the biggest night on the New York fashion calendar.

The Gala, better known as The Met Gala or Met Ball, saw some of the biggest stars turned heads in some seriously stylish couture.

The theme of the night was "White Tie and Diamonds," to honor Anna Wintour's "Charles James: Beyond Fashion" exhibit at the museum.

Stars like Sarah Jessica Parker, Taylor Swift, Blake Lively, Charlize Theron, Karolina Kurkova, Sarah Silverman and Ivanka Trump all sported some classic gowns that paid homage to the designer du jour.

And then there were the ones who went outside the box.

Kim Kardashian pulled an Angelina Jolie with her leggy Lanvin showing a bit too much skin.

Stars like Rihanna, Anne Hathaway and Emma Stone wore two-piece dresses that showed off their toned midriffs.

Lupita Nyong'o, won't get the best dressed award for her red carpet look.

People like Zoe Saldana, Katie Holmes, Sandra Lee and even the gorgeous Kate Upton disappointed in the dress department.

This year, the glamour quotient was raised a notch: Men were asked to dress in white tie — full evening dress, in other words — a fancier proposition than black tie.

The request was in keeping with the theme of this year's Costume Institute exhibit, which opens to the public on Thursday: "Charles James: Beyond Fashion."

James, who died in 1978, was a mid-20th century designer who specialized in spectacular, sculptured gowns made with intricate draping techniques.

It's the inaugural exhibit of the new, $40 million Anna Wintour Costume Center, named for the Vogue editor.
