Miss Universe crown taken from Miss Colombia

The crown is removed from Miss Colombia Ariadna Gutierrez (L) Miss Universe 2014 Paulina Vega (C) after pageant's host misread the card stating Miss Philippines Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach (R) as winner in the 2015 MISS UNIVERSE show at Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino, in Las Vegas, California, on December 20, 2015. Miss Philippines Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach's crowning glory is marred and people will probably talk more about this goof-up then her glorious win.

Harvey read the card wrong, confuses the verdict and announces Miss Colombia as the winner.

Miss Colombia Ariadna Gutierrez was crowned by Miss Universe 2014 Paulina Vega and the new queen glided down the stage for her victory walk, waving at crowd.

Ariadna Gutierrez remained Miss Universe for a matter of moments before Steve Harvey realized what he'd done.

Harvey called for attention of the contestants, millions of TV viewers and hundreds of live audience.

Harvey: "Ok folks, I have to apologise, the first runner-up is Miss Colombia. Miss Universe 2015 is Miss Philippines."

Standing in the dark Miss Philippines was left flummoxed as the spot light shifted. She had no way to know if the comedian host was having fun at her expense.

Mystified Wurtzbach appeared stunned as she walked to the front of the stage alongside the crown-wearing Arevalo - still not sure how to react.

The crowd jeered and cheered and sensing the confusion Harvey said, "I will take responsibility for this. It was my mistake. It was on the card. Horrible mistake."

Last year's winner Paulina Vega was summoned back on stage and she had to do one of the most difficult task - remove the crown from Miss Colombia and placed it on Wurtzbach's head instead.

And sadly the crowning moment was marred and the program abruptly ended.

A composed Miss Colombia later had a message for her fans who voted for her and said, "everything happens for a reason...".

Here's what Steve Harvey had to say on Twitter: "I want to apologize emphatically to Miss Philippines and Miss Colombia. This was a terribly honest human mistake. I am so so regretful."

The pageant organisers also issued a statement calling the goof-up a 'human error'.

The statement: "The excitement of live TV was evident tonight on The Miss Universe stage with over 10 million live fan votes tabulated. Unfortunately, a live telecast means that human error can come  into play. We witnessed that tonight when the wrong winner was initially announced. Our sincerest apologies to Miss Universe Colombia, Miss Universe Philippines , their families and fans. We congratulate Miss Universe Philippines as Miss Universe 2015."
