2014 was a year of heartbreak, with many high-profile celeb couples parting ways. We look at the five romances that (unfortunately) didn't have a happy ending.

Just a week short of their 13th wedding  anniversary, Bollywood superstar Hrithik Roshan announced his separation from his wife Sussanne with a press statement. A year later, their divorce has been finalised in an Indian court. Hrithik and Sussanne have two boys - Hrehaan and Hridaan, whose custody is what they are working on. Soon after the separation, the media went into an overdrive trying to piece together the mystery surrounding their breakup. Talks of infidelity on both sides, and compatibility with the extended family are some of the reasons that have surfaced.

Bipasha Basu – Harman Baweja
 
After dating on the sly, just when Bipasha Basu and Harman Baweja decided to go public with their romance, reports of their split started to appear. It's unfortunate, but the actors have finally put the rumour mills to rest, and confirmed in separate media statements that they have indeed parted ways. "We have had our differences but this rumour is rubbish and has nothing to do with us taking our time off. In our relationship we have been dignified and we respect each other. We do not like people having a field day at our expense. Whether we continue or not, we do and will always respect each other and would request the media to respect our privacy too instead of printing all kind of rumours without even verifying it with us," Harman had stated.
 
Considering they've each shared bad breakups in the past, it's sad that this time too they've been unlucky in love.

Dev Patel – Freida Pinto
 
They were fairly unknown faces, who found fame and love on the set of the Oscar-winning 'Slumdog Millionaire'. After dating for nearly six years, the couple have decided to call it quits. A source told US Weekly that "Freida is single and happy". Media reports suggest the 30-year-old actress is enjoying her new found status and her buddies are happily setting her on dates. Her 24-year-old ex was noticeably absent at her 30th birthday celebrations, hinting at their breakup.

Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon

After months of speculation over whether they were together or not, Nick confirmed the split, stating, "There is trouble in paradise. We have been living in separate houses for a few months." The couple married in 2008, in a secret ceremony, just weeks after they started dating. They have twins Moroccan and Monroe. There was even talks that Nick was planning to release a music album slamming his ex-wife, but the rapper refuted on twitter stating he was indulging in no such thing.

John Mayer and Katy Perry

After dating on and off for two years, John Mayer and Katy Perry finally called off their romance in February. According to celeb magazines, the couple were fighting a lot, and Katy was "stressed about the tour". Insiders claim Katy was fed up with John's roving eye.
