Rihanna not alone: Miley, Katrina Kaif, Lady Gaga first went taboo

Singer Rihanna's diamond tour sparkle in the UAE lost its shine a bit when the singer attracted negative publicity after posing for photographs in a mosque.

But the Barbadian is not the only celebrity to face the wrath of authorities. Here's a look at some of the other stars who were shown the door.

RIHANNA: The singer was asked to leave Abu Dhabi's Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque complex for posing for "inappropriate" pictures outside one of the world's largest Muslim places of worship. Authorities said they had taken action before the Barbadian singer entered the mosque itself, which is not off-limits to non-Muslims and has become a major tourist attraction in the United Arab Emirates capital.

KATRINA KAIF: During the filming of 'Namaste London' in 2007, Indian film actress Katrina Kaif wore a frock at Khwaja Moinuddin Chisti’s dargah in Ajmer. Quite understandably, her dress that ended well above her knees brought her an instant backlash, and saw her beating a hasty retreat out of the dargah premises.

MILEY CYRUS: This singer has become a daily fodder for gossip columns. Miley Cyrus has being banned from entering China. Back in 2009 when she was just 16 years old, she was banned after posting a picture of her with her friends making a face that seems to mock Asian people. She later issued an apology for the offensive picture. The Chinese government sends out an official statement banning her from the country and branding her as ‘no friend of China or anyone of East Asian descent.’

LADY GAGA: Controversy’s favourite child Lady Gaga was denied a permit to perform a show in Indonesia in 2012. Religious groups protested against her coming, and officials feared that if she came they would not be able to contain the protest. She is a controversial public figure, and these religious groups thought that her music might "destroy the children's sense of morality."

BRAD PITT: After starring in 'Seven Years In Tibet', Brad Pitt was banned from entering China. The government's objection was that the film displayed Communist Chinese military officers negatively, whereas the Dalai Lama is portrayed sympathetically. Brad Pitt is not the only person banned from China over this movie, David Thewlis, another star of the movie, and director Jean-Jacques Annaud were also banned. Actor Harrison Ford and Richard Gere too are banned from China owing to their support for the free Tibet movement.

HIMESH RESHAMIYA: Indian singer Himesh Reshammiya's visit to the Ajmer Sharif dargah could have gone unnoticed but for his own gimmick. In June 2008, Reshammiya visited the dargah in a burqa (which is worn by Muslim women). He assumed his popularity will create commotion and hence to avoid that he dressed up like a lady. But once people got wind of him in a burqa, he attracted all the wrong attentions.

PARIS HILTON: In 2010, after flying all the way to Japan, Paris was denied entry by immigration officials due to a drug-related arrest. She had recently pleaded guilty for possession of cocaine in Las Vegas. The trip was planned to promote her fragrance and fashion lines in Tokyo, but after being questioned for 6 hours and kept overnight, she boarded a flight back home. She is not the first celebrity that Japan has turned away over drug-related arrests; The Rolling Stones and Paul McCartney have also run into trouble there.

THE BEATLES: In 1964, the Beatles were refused entry to Israel because officials feared that "the performances by the Beatles are liable to have a negative influence on the [country's] youth." This line is taken from the committee’s rejection resolution. The Beatles were active from the late 1950's to 1970 and were no strangers to controversy. From offending the first lady of the Philippines with a snubbed breakfast invitation, to a Vatican issued protest against their music.

ALEC BALDWIN: The actor is banned from the Philippines in 2009 after making a joke on 'The Late Show' with David Letterman. The joke was about mail order brides in the Philippines, Baldwin was trying to joke that he needed a mail order bride if he wanted to have more children. He publicly apologized, but the Philippines Immigration commissioner had released a statement saying, "By being in the bureau's blacklist, Baldwin is forbidden from entering the country as he is deemed an undesirable alien."
