A Mumbai Court today (June 24) rejected Bollywood actor Salman Khan's review petition in the 2002 hit-and-run case.

Salman Khan will now be tried for culpable homicide not amounting to murder.

This means that after trail, if Salman is found guilty, he may face upto 10 years in jail.

After evading court visits for long Salman has now  been given a month's time to appear before the court.

Khan had appealed against a retrial of the case under the stringent charge of culpable homicide not amounting to murder.

Earlier, Khan had been tried under the less severe Section, relating to causing death by negligence, which stipulates a maximum two years in jail.

However, the metropolitan magistrate, after examining 17 witnesses in the case, had invoked the more serious charge of culpable homicide against Khan.

In 2002, Salman Khan had allegedly rammed his Toyota Land Cruiser into a bakery and then run over a group of sleeping persons on the pavement in front of the bakery on 28 September killing one person was killed and four others were injured.

An expert who had analysed the actor’s blood had told a court that the actor was drunk at the time of the accident.

Salman’s police bodyguard Ravindra Patil, in his deposition, had confirmed the actor was drunk and had been advised by him against driving in an inebriated state.

Salman's Bollywood colleague and close friend Sanjay Dutt was sent to jail as he was convicted for illegal posession of arms and also destroying evidence during the 1993 Mumbai bomb blast.

Of the total term of five years, Dutt has already served 18 months in jail two decades ago and the Indian Supreme Court, in its order of March 21, asked him to serve another 42 months.

Now if the charges are proved and Salman is found guilty he may face upto ten years in jail.
