Shah Rukh Khan, Deepika's 'Indiawaale' falls short of expectations

The first song of the much awaited 'Happy New Year', "IndiaWaale" is out and no it doesn't give us any goose bumps as director Farah Khan hoped and far from being a foot-tapping number.

The song, falls woefully short of expectations. More than invoking patriotism like Farah Khan wanted it to be or even a dance number, the song simply serves as an introductory gizmo of the lead characters.

It’s almost like director Farah Khan set the perfect homecoming for (now) best bud Shah Rukh Khan in her glossy song-and-dance number for their big fat Bollywood reunion in ‘Happy New Year’.

Their pop track ‘Indiawaale’ is so retro that we are reminded of 90’s musician duo Nadeem-Shravan. Not just that, its frames are an ode to their earlier Bollywood teamwork – ‘Main Hoon Na’ and ‘Om Shanti Om’.

Their brief spilt as friends surfaced after Farah roped in another actor (Akshay Kumar), instead of SRK, for her third film (‘Tees Maar Khan’). The movie bombed at the box-office, and Farah soon shifted alliance with SRK, and gave Akki the slip.

She’s clearly not going to make that blunder again. And, now that Farah and SRK have finally buried the hatchet, she’s going the extra mile to keep her buddy in great spirits.

‘Indiawaale’ opens in an opulent setting, reminiscent of what we saw in ‘Om Shanti Om’, with a jacketed SRK incessantly dancing alongside a midriff-flaunting Deepika Padukone. The massive stairway and the sidewalks are all there, even the chandeliers.

Then, there’s the big dancing group much like in their first movie together – ‘Main Hoon Na’. Only, here, Deepika’s svelte figure is swapped with another midriff-flaunting dancing number from Sushmita Sen.

There are also the back-up dancers. While ‘Main Hoon Na’ had Amrita Rao, Zayed Khan, Sajid Khan and Boman Irani, ‘Indiawaale’ has Boman (again), Abhishek Bachchan, Sonu Sood, Vivaan Shah.

The only difference, really, is the colour scheme. While the 2004-hit ‘Goori Goori’ is shaded in red and black, ‘Indiawaale’ is coloured in purple and blue.

The 2-minute-16-second music track shifts scene mid-way to Dubai’s plush Atlantis, with the gang of six boogying at (what appears to look like) a dancing contest.

Vishal and Shekar have tuned the music tracks for ‘Happy New Year’. They had worked in ‘Om Shanti Om’ and Farah’s earlier ‘Tees Maar Khan’, while Anu Malik was in-charge of music for ‘Main Hoon Na’.

‘Happy New Year’, which is extensively shot in India and Dubai, is slated for an October release.
