Weekend movie guide: What to watch, and what to skip

Published

Another weekend, and yet another round-up of which movie deserves a trip to the movie hall, and which doesn’t merit access to your movie piggybank. There are quite a few runners for the latter, making this a dull weekend at the cinemas.

Although Ridley Scott’s much-awaited ‘Prometheus’ appears promising, with out-of-the-world special effects, there’s a lot lacking in terms of screenplay, performance and novelty. There have been far too many wars waged in the past, where humans battle the extra-terrestrials for supremacy, that this one appears a tad jaded.

James Mather and Stephen St. Leger’s ‘Lock-Out’ also falls in the above category, for heading out on an outer space expedition that’s completely inexplicable and illogical. It’s a rescue mission that requires a convict to blast off into space in search of the US president’s abducted daughter.

‘Cat Run’ is another muddled affair that is best left untouched, with the Hollywood Reporter branding it as a “self-consciously sleazy comic crime saga”.

‘A Few Best Men’ is another ‘Hangover’-rip-off, one that lacks in fun and spunk like the infamous original. “It’s a fake ‘Hangover’,” asserted a viewer.

The silver lining in this line-up of completely forgettable tales is Dibakar Banerjee’s political thriller ‘Shanghai’, which highlights the issues circulating a small town as it tries to rise in stature as the next Shanghai.
