Continuous delivery of sustainable development requires a state-of-the-art infrastructure that keeps pace with the development that the UAE is witnessing in implementation of the directives of President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, to raise the profile of the UAE and honour serving the progress, development and welfare of the Emirati people, General Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, and Chairman of Abu Dhabi Executive Council, underscored.

Sheikh Mohamed made his remarks during a meeting of the Abu Dhabi Executive Committee at Al Mamoura Building in the presence of Sheikh Hazza bin Zayed Al Nahyan, National Security Advisor and Deputy Chairman of Abu Dhabi Executive Council. During the meeting, the Crown Prince was updated on the progress of the government of Abu Dhabi work and implementation of current initiatives and those planned for the future in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi.

Having reviewed government projects during the regular weekly meeting of the committee, he instructed that all efforts be concerted and mobilised to implement these projects on a par with the best recognised practices, on the set schedule, and that circumstances be prepared to enable national professionals to shoulder their responsibilities in realising the Abu Dhabi Vision, playing a more significant and more effective role in the social, knowledge, educational and economic development.

The Executive Committee discussed a series of resolutions that emphasised the wise leadership's determination to upgrade the education sector and provide all means for improving the learning quality and increase the participation of citizens, in consistence with an inclusive, integrated vision for development of human resources in the education sector.

The Crown Prince also viewed plans prepared by the Department of Municipal Affairs to improve the health environment of Abu Dhabi city, particularly in areas of landscaping, lawns and gardens, through the awarding of maintenance and operation contracts worth more than Dh426 million, in accordance with the latest agricultural and irrigation techniques that reduce water consumption in line with environmental standards.

Sheikh Mohamed also received a detailed presentation on new projects aimed at raising the capacity of the electricity network in the emirate by approving construction of five combined distribution stations, supply and installation of power cables, electric equipment, digital power metres, overhead power lines and network upgrades at a total cost of over AED 268 million.

These projects aim to boost the electricity network to meet growing demand and economic growth being experienced by the emirate.

Also reviewed during the meeting were the progress of infrastructure works in Khalifa City, including the internal lighting project utilising 3,108 light-emitting diode (LED) poles, sewerage works and the building of pavements at a total value of AED 242 million as part of a project approved by the Abu Dhabi Executive Council last year.

The participants also discussed the work progress on the maintenance of internal roads and their completion phases in Abu Dhabi. They also discussed details on roads and infrastructure work in various areas in Al Ain, which are scheduled to start this year.

The projects include street lighting, car parks, the drainage network and pedestrian pavements at a total cost of Dh40 million.

The projects also include the implementation of 12.5 kilometres of internal roads, 32.7 kilometres of pedestrian sidewalks, 1,935 car parking lots and about 9km of a storm drainage network, in addition to 430 lamp-posts.

The projects come within the ongoing modernisation and expansion of Abu Dhabi and Al Ain's infrastructure network in all sectors to keep pace with urban growth and ensure the best living standards for citizens.

The committee also reviewed the work progress on Mafraq-Ghweifat highway and the Abu Dhabi-Dubai main road projects.

Also reviewed were the latest achievements of the first phase of the Etihad Rail Project, including the line between Habshan and Al Ruwais, at a length of 140 km, in addition to another 20 km of detours and side tracks, which are deemed important milestones in the march of development process of the first railway in the UAE.

The first phase of the 264 km Shah-Habshan line will be fully completed at the end of this year. Seven carriages and 110 wagons will run on this line.
