An Israeli air strike on the Gaza Strip overnight on Monday injured four Palestinians, Palestinian security officials and witnesses said.

The four casualties, including one woman, were slightly hurt by shell fragments when an Israeli aircraft fired a missile on a house in the east part of Gaza City.

The house, which was empty at the time, was completely destroyed and three other neighbouring houses were damaged.

An Israeli military spokesman confirmed the attack, saying it had been in response to the firing of a rocket against Israel and had targetted a house where weapons were being made.

Earlier Monday, militants in the Gaza Strip fired a rocket into southern Israel. It caused no casualties.

Late Monday, Israeli troops and Palestinian militants exchanged gunfire near the Kissufim crossing point into the Gaza Strip, Israel's Channel 10 television reported.

And in a separate incident an Israeli soldier was killed in a "friendly fire" incident near the border with Gaza as the military was tracking Palestinian suspects late on Monday, an army spokesman said.
