Killer to walk free after paying diya

An Asian man convicted of murdering his friend by crushing his head with a rock in Ras Al Khaimah will walk free shortly after his relatives paid diya (blood money) to the victim’s family, newspapers reported on Wednesday.

A criminal court in the northern emirate sentenced the killer, BR, to death last month but it later reduced the verdict to three years in jail after the victim’s relatives agreed to pardon the killer in return for diya.

The victim’s lawyer, Mohammed Hassan, said the convict would soon be set free and deported from the UAE as he had already spent three years in prison.
