Located on Arbat Street, a touristy, pedestrianised thoroughfare lined with portrait artists, buskers and hustlers, the restaurant admits it will probably mainly draw one-time novelty visitors rather than repeat clients.

"This is truly unusual for Moscow, I have never seen anything like this before. But it is fascinating and interesting to visit and try. And in general, one can return again because the food here is delicious," says a satisfied customer.

Although owner Alexander Donskoi has owned other cafes, he says this is his most novel and is garnering great interest especially among children.

The Crazy Toilet Cafe is not the only one in the world, with similarly themed eateries in Taiwan and China.

Donskoi says he hopes to give the cafe a Russian spin to it.

The cafe's menu is very affordable and stays true to its name.

The menu features three dubious courses each with a lavatorial theme: a brown and creamy mushroom soup served in a toilet bowl, followed by a swirled sausage served with three piles of steaming mashed potato.

If visitors have not lost their appetite by this point, they can finish it off with a bowl of whipped chocolate ice cream.

And there is no escaping the toilet theme on the drinks menu either.
