17-year-old abused wife commits suicide

A 17-year-old Yemeni wife committed suicide by hanging herself at her home in Saudi Arabia because of persistent abuses by her ageing Saudi husband.

The woman was found hanging by a rope tied around her neck and to the ceiling fan at her house in the southern Saudi Abha town, police said.

Ajel newspaper quoted police spokesman Captain Mohammed Al Shahrani as saying the case is being investigated. It quoted relatives as saying the women ended her life because of persistent abuses by her husband.

The paper also quoted the woman’s mother as saying: "I appeal for the King to be fair to us and punish this husband for pushing my daughter to end her life.”

The paper did not mention the husband’s age but said he had been married six times and has eight children.
