A power generator failure has deprived 18 families in a Sharjah building of electricity over the past five days, forcing some of them to live in hotels and others to go to mosques and public parks.

The families comprise more than 200 people including children and seniors, many of whom live on upper floors.
Residents of the building in the Clock Tower area said they had tried many times to reach the property’s judicial receivers, but that their demands to repair the breakdown were ignored.

They said they later resorted to the Sharjah Electricity and Water Authority (Sewa) and the police, since the building is under judicial receivership as its owner is in jail.

“The families include Arabs and Asians and they have been suffering over the past five days because of that problem,” the semi-official daily Al Ittihad said.

“Some of them have been forced to check in to hotels while others went to live in mosques and public parks. “Their ordeal is underscored by the soaring summer temperatures and the fact that most of them are fasting during Ramadan.”

The paper quoted residents as saying they have contacted the receiver many times to repair the power generator but added he had refused to pay Dh12,000-15,000 for the repair and maintenance.

They said Sewa and the police have promised to tackle the problem today.

“For five days, we and other families in this building of nine floors have lived without electricity and water.

“The weather is unbearable and most of them have children and old people who cannot climb up the stairs to reach their flats,” the paper said, quoted Abdul Razzaq Mohammed Ali, a resident of the building.
