Sharjah Police found a three-day-old girl abandoned in an under construction building in Al Zubair on Wednesday.

The baby, who was dehydrated and tired and extremely week, was found wrapped in a blanket and placed in a cardboard box, Khaleej Times reported.

Clothes and a feeding bottle were also found beside the infant, a police official said.

The baby girl was rushed to Al Qasimi Hospital in an ambulance, where she was fed and received treatment. The baby has since then recovered well and remains in good condition.

The police have launched an investigation to find the parents of the child.

This is the fifth case of child abandonment in the last five months in Sharjah.

Recently, a year-old boy was found in his stroller with his milk bottle at the entrance of a building in Al Qasimiya area by the police. The police said they were investigating the case and hoped to find the parents soon.

An official at the Sharjah Police attributed the problem of unwanted babies to the many single men and women from various nationalities coming from different religions and backgrounds. Most cases involved housemaids in a relationship with someone from her sponsor’s family, a driver or someone she knows.

Shaikh Mohammed bin Saqr Al Qasimi, Director of the Sharjah Medical Zone, who heads the Abandoned Child Protection Committee, said 1,068 children were receiving assistance from the committee. The Sharjah Police are part of the panel.
