The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has sold more than three million Nol cards that are used for public transport since September 2009.
"An average of more than 5,000 Nol cards of different categories are being sold every day and it shows that how fast is the public transport system getting popular in Dubai," said Abdullah Al Madani, CEO of the Corporate Technical Support Services at RTA.
Among different categories, Nol Silver continued its lead with the sale of 3,000 cards daily with the majority of daily commuters using the silver cards.
The growing popularity of metro, which is yet to complete two years of operations, is reflected by its daily ridership of well over 150,000.
Al Madani noted that daily transactions are up due to the radical change in the public transport sector in Dubai. "Over the past years RTA has been working on upgrading its services to cope with the tempo and flexibility of the daily life," he added.
The RTA offers four categories of Nol cards: the Red Card, Silver Card, Gold Card and the personalised Blue Card.
